music in the womb
Friday, June 06, 2008A couple of weeks ago my pregnancy journal stated that the baby can now hear what is going on outside of the womb. I decided that I should definitely play some music for the kiddo. (Yes, I realize this is completely cliche and somewhat dorky. But research has shown that there are some benefits to doing this.) On Wednesday I started a playlist in iTunes that I could transfer over to my iPod. What started out as a few classical songs turned into the musical education of my unborn child. Labels: bakin' a bun, music
I was picking through the classical music in our library when I came upon "Video Killed the Radio Star". I thought, "That would be really cool if my kid knew that song". So I added it to the playlist which then of course snowballed. There had to be some Ben Folds, Elton John, oldies, uh hello...Frank Sinatra, Jack Johnson... (I avoided anything that was a lot of bass or too harsh sounding.) I now have 4.6 hours of songs to play. Who knows what I'd have if I tackled our cd collection!
If research is correct the baby will be comforted by some of these songs after it is born. Let's face it, who wouldn't want their kid to be comforted by Stevie Wonder and REO Speedwagon?

Josh and I went to see Juno on Saturday. We had to drive a little further than usual since it wasn't playing in our area. (Although I just checked and it opened this week here.) I loved it! We saw a preview for it months ago and I wanted to see it immediately. I was worried I had built it up too much but I was not disappointed. Although it was hilarious, it was also touching and I got a bit choked up at the end.
I loved the music in it too...so much that we drove to three different stores looking for the soundtrack after the movie. Turns out that even though you can download it off iTunes, you can't buy it on cd until tomorrow.
We've been quoting Juno since we saw it on Saturday. There were so many good lines that it was hard to catch them all. I might have to go see it again!

This is one of my favorite Christmas commercials this year. I mean, you really can't go wrong with a little girl in glasses and John Lennon in the background.
That commercial also led me to a cover of that song, Real Love. Normally I'm not a huge fan of Beatles covers because well...they're the Beatles...nobody can do it better. But this is Regina Spektor and love her. I think she nailed it.
I'm a total sap and have a favorite Christmas commercial every year.

I love the Flight of the Conchords but this song has been stuck in my head since yesterday. You all must have it stuck in your heads too.
write you a song
Thursday, July 26, 2007Sometimes when Josh and I are in the car together, he'll specifically play a song for me. He'll point out that he really likes it and wink at me. I will usually then sit real still and listen to the words. I always find it so endearing that a song reminded him of me or our relationship and he wants me to hear it. Labels: all you need is love, music
Last Saturday night we were listening to the new Plain White T's cd. Josh told me that he really liked track nine so he skipped ahead to it. He gave me "that smirk" so I listened closely. Here's the preview on iTunes and the lyrics:
"Write You A Song" by Plain White T's
I don't know how to make lots of money
I got debts that I'm trying to pay
I can't buy you nice things, like big diamond rings
But that don't mean much anyway
I can't give you the house you've been dreaming
If I could I would build it alone
I'd be out there all day, just hammering away
Make us a place of our own
I will write you a song
That's how you'll know that my love is still strong
I will write you a song
And you'll know from this song that I just can't go on without you
I don't know that I'd make a good soldier
I don't believe in being violent and cruel
I don't know how to fight, but I'll draw blood tonight
If somebody tries hurting you
I will write you a song
That's how you'll know that my love is still strong
I will write you a song
And you'll know from this song that I just can't go on without you
Now that it's out on the table (it's out on the table)
Both of us knew all along (knew all along)
I've got your loving and you've got my song
I don't know how to make lots of money
I don't know all the right things to do
I can't say where we'll go, but the one thing I know
Is how to be a good man to you
Until I die that's what I'll do
I will write you a song
That's how you'll know that my love is still strong
I will write you a song
And you'll know from this song that I just can't go on without
I will write you a song (I will write you a song)
That's how you'll know that my love is still strong (love is still strong)
I will write you a song
And you know from this song that I just can't go on without you
Funny how a song can perfectly describe something...
we're still fighting it

I can't believe it's been almost two years since I last saw Ben Folds in concert. Josh and I got to see him last night when he came to Illinois State.
Of course you weren't allowed to take pictures (which I don't get) and there was camera patrol all over. I took the above picture rested on my knee, holding my breath with no flash. And because I'm such a rebel, I took some video too.
He's just so cool. Some highlights of the show: He played an electric keyboard with his foot while playing his piano (and it sounded good). At one point he played the bass and drums at the same time, occasionally hitting the strings with the drumstick. He played Underground and I sang the lyrics really loud! "Hand me my nose ring!" Ben Folds sang his cover of Dr. Dre's B*****s Ain't S**t that had practically everyone singing along (sorry, but not me). I will admit that it's pretty awesome to hear an auditorium full singing along.
Anyway, he's just so amazingly talented and seems to be so down-to-earth. It's such a combination that it's hard not to be fascinated with him. As always, I'll be looking forward to the next show of his!
christmas has started
Monday, November 20, 2006My mom informed me the other day that a local radio station had started playing all Christmas music. Friday afternoon I headed into town and listened to the Christmas station the whole way. I got to the first stoplight in town and looked to my right. There was a truck pulling a trailer FULL of Christmas trees. I'm sure I smiled like a goofball but I couldn't help it. It was suddenly like signs of Christmas. That evening I spent forever combing the aisles of Hobby Lobby. I looked through every row of Christmas ornaments and decorations. I decided I should take inventory of my Christmas decorations before I start buying new stuff. My goal for the beginning of the week is to go through all of my decorations and plan everything out. This way I can decorate on Sunday! Labels: christmas cheer, everything else, music
I already have started the morning off with the Elf Soundtrack. Gosh, I love Christmas. I can't believe it's on its way already.
going country
Monday, September 25, 2006Labels: about me, music, the one with friends
That's my friend, Nicole, and I...at a country bar. Saturday night I went along with Nicole to hear the band Trent Willmon. Anyone who knows me even a little bit knows that I'm not a fan of country music (to put it lightly). I did go through a phase for about 6 months in high school but I eventually snapped out it.
Walking into the bar, I felt immediately out of place. Dangit, I had forgotten to wear my cowboy hat and confederate flag t-shirt. Nicole and I found a place to stand by a counter. Within 20 minutes of being there a very drunk man came by and gave us a hug. An opening band that I assume was local played a lot of cover songs (although they were all new to me). We met a bachelor party that was making a pit stop until they hit the strip club. One of the guys from that group was busy smacking girls' butts as they walked by him. Of course that particular drunk guy wanted to ask me to dance when I slow song came on. I was never so happy to tell him I was married.
Here is a video clip that I shot with my camera to prove I was there. Unfortunately when I turned the camera around it's too dark to see me. Oh well.
All in all it wasn't too bad. I do think I heard enough country music to last me at least five years. But I got to hear some really crappy pickup lines and hang out with my good friend...it could have been worse.

You never know what might inspire you. Music, art, random things you walk past... Here are some things that have inspired me lately.
Music
I am completely obsessed with the song Fidelity by Regina Spektor. I caught the video on TV a week or so ago and have listened to the song about a hundred times. Great video.
Yesterday I listened to Ben Kamen for awhile. Totally rainy day music...
I was perusing Pure Volume and happened upon these guys: The Elliot Project. Very enjoyable.
Art
I ran across the artist Rania Hassan. Check out these awesome paintings that incorporate knitting. I love them! I think they would be perfect for my craft room.
I've been enjoying the Flickr group: get crafty!
Also check out Tiny Showcase. I ordered this one in June.

I don't know if it was the double shot of espresso in my latte or the time I spent with my friend Emily but I drove home tonight feeling so inspired. We talked a lot about photography and I just really feel like I'm supposed to develop my couples portfolio. We talked about me doing some pictures of Emily and her husband. I just feel like I have loads of ideas for cool couples shots. So I drove home talking a mile a minute to Josh on my cell phone. I decided that I'm going to do as many pictures of couples I know to expand that portion of my portfolio. I already have some specific ideas for my brother and his girlfriend and they don't even know that they're going to be models for me. I want to take pictures by old buildings, in alleys, by brick walls...my list could go on and on...
I have been addicted to this song by Hellogoodbye called "Oh, It is Love". I think that has inspired me as well. Anyway, I'm excited to start on this. I think I could just keep rambling about this. This is me hopped up on caffiene, feeling really tired but very I.N.S.P.I.R.E.D. It's a good feeling. More to come...

Internet, meet my niece...
Josh and I went over to the hospital to meet our new niece, Kate. She is so sweet and beautiful (totally doesn't have that newborn squished face). Missy and Eric were both looking a little tired but really happy. Missy passed her off to me as soon as I got in the door. She wouldn't open her eyes for me...just slept peacefully. It's pretty cool to be an Aunt.
One of my favorite Ben Folds songs is "Kate". I'm thinking that Uncle Josh and Aunt Kimberly will definitely have to serenade the little one very soon...
Kate - Ben Folds Five (Not sure if it's legal but here, you can listen...)
"She plays wipeout on the drums
The squirrels and the birds come
Gather round and sing the guitar
Oh I. . .have you got nothing to say
When all words fail she speaks
Her mix tapes a masterpiece
Walks through the garden
So the roses can see
Oh i. . .have you got nothing to say
And you can see daisies
In her footsteps
Dandelions, butterflies
I wanna be Kate..."
busy, busy
Wednesday, May 10, 2006I was a busy little bee last night. Although I was a grump, Josh ran into town with me to pick up some things we needed. (For one, video tapes to tape Jess's wedding!) We got home and I worked on some graduation party postcards I'm doing. I finally got them to print right... [side note: I seriously am a perfectionist.] Labels: music, the one with friends
So while those were printing Josh and I worked on our OUT OF CONTROL cd collection. I don't know how it happens ... actually I do know how it happens... We don't put cds back in the binders for like six months. I really need to do some revamping to get the new ones alphabetized but for now they're semi-organized. After the cds were organized, we went through and pulled out music for Jess's wedding reception. I volunteered to make some playlists of music for the dinner time. I love doing that stuff. The only problem is getting it done before I leave tomorrow!
Luckily I finished all of the wedding programs on Monday night. Whew. I talked to Jess last night and she was saying how she did pretty much nothing all evening! She played in make-up with a Mary Kay lady and chilled out. She says, "So basically you're saying that you were more productive than the bride". Um, yeah but that's the way it should be just a few days before the wedding!
dq and dancing
Wednesday, April 05, 2006Josh and I were invited over to his parents last night for supper. It's great to be feeling way more comfortable there and around them. We ate supper and visited for awhile until Jenna got home from play practice. Josh's dad decided that we all needed some ice cream so we headed over to Dairy Queen. Josh, Jenna and I all piled into the back seat of his truck and away we went. Labels: family matters, music
Scott started blaring some terrible country music which I found out from Jenna was a group called "Big & Rich". Lucky for us, Jenna had brought her iPod and I had my iTrip in my purse. Jenna convinced Scott to tune the radio to 87.9 for some good music. Jenna turned on My Humps by Black Eyed Peas. Josh, Jen and I instantly all started dancing. And in true Knight form, Scott leaned his seat back, slid down and put one hand on the steering wheel like he was rockin' out. Only Cindy looked like we had all lost our minds. Josh and I looked at each other and shook our heads...we were dancing in the backseat of his parent's vehicle and they were in it! Who would have thought that would ever happen...
i am easily random
Thursday, March 23, 2006Today I feel like packin' it up and going back to bed. No real reason. I mean, my day isn't really going bad... I've had my coffee... The sun is even shining. Maybe because my bed is so incredibly comfortable. I feel like my life this past week has revolved around when I can go back to bed.
I've been working a lot on Jess's Shower. I'm so excited for it! This is my first bridal shower to host. Right now I'm concentrating on the favors for everyone. Here is the invite I designed (ignore the squiggles):
You know what song I like that's totally not me? "Control Myself" by LL Cool J. I mean, let's face it, that guy is so smooth. I can't help by sing along when that song comes on the radio. And then of course I laugh at myself by how ridiculous I'm sure I sound!
Me: Knock, Knock...
You: Who's there?
Me: Control Freak
You: Co-

things about me
Friday, February 17, 2006I made it to Friday! Some weeks I feel like that's cause for celebration. I don't feel like doing a real post so I thought I would come up with a list of some things you may not know about me. Just something fun for a Friday.
So here they are:
-I wiggle my toes when I'm tense or nervous.
-I still think my dad could beat up your dad.
-I drink coffee everyday.
-If I don't understand something I usually just smile and nod.
-I was sure that I would get married before my 25th birthday when I was in high school. (I made it by 38 days.)
-I almost always have gum and some sort of lip gloss with me.
-I giggle a lot, although I will usually deny it if someone points it out.
-By the time I was in Junior High I could forge my mom's signature so well that she would have me write out checks for her.
-I hate feet.
-I always blare music and sing along when I'm alone in the car, even at stoplights. I once was singing to "I Like The Way You Move" by Outkast on the radio and a guy in a truck that passed me joined in. He even did some dancing.
-I once smoked a cigar with a friend and almost puked in Walmart later in the evening.
-If it was financially feasible I would love to have ten kids.
-I always want to clean the apartment after I watch home improvement shows.
-I love the circus even though I'm kind of afraid of clowns.
-Although most people say that my brother and I look alike, I honestly cannot see the resemblance.
-I cry whenever I see a marriage proposal on TV or in a movie...doesn't matter who it is or how it's done.
-I would wear flip flops everyday (even in the winter).
-I got my only detention ever during my Senior year of high school because I parked my car where there was no lines to park. I sat after school that day with my class's Valedictorian and the class clown who also parked where they shouldn't. Apparently the teacher that did the same was not made to do detention. I'm still bitter.
-I hate my teeth (the overbite, more specifically) so much that if we could afford it -I would get braces tomorrow.
-I quote movies constantly.
-Fridays and Saturdays are my favorite days of the week and I always live for the weekend. posted by kimberly, 7:56 AM 1 comments |
The Rocket Summer Rocks!
Monday, December 19, 2005Labels: music
Saturday Josh and I took his little sister, Jenna, to The Rocket Summer concert in St. Louis. Josh and I turned Jenna on to TRS around the time we started dating. We were so proud that she was listening to a slightly underground band. For her birthday we thought it would be perfect to take her to the TRS concert.
You may remember that Josh and I were just at The Creepy Crawl for a TRS concert last month. It was so great to see Bryce Avery perform again. He's just so likeable! Jenna had the biggest smile on her face the whole time...it was great. We also caught most of hellogoodbye's performance.
Here is what Bryce Avery says about Saturday (from his website): "I also want to thank everyone who came out to the recent tour with my buds Hellogoodbye that started directly after our headlining tour and ended last night with an epic show in St Louis which was such an awesome way to end the year."
Alright, I'll stop talking about TRS now. We took some pictures which you can see at flickr.
Wow. The Rocket Summer.
Thursday, November 03, 2005Last night Josh and I drove down to the Creepy Crawl in St. Louis with my brother and his girlfriend to go to a Rocket Summer concert. What? You've never heard of The Rocket Summer? Oh my goodness. Let me tell you about this guy...phenomenal. He writes everything, sings, and performs all of the instruments on each album. Labels: music
Here is the description of him on his website:"The Rocket Summer is a very original, piano/guitar filled melodic pop rock
I think his passion and sincerity are what struck me the most. It was just so obvious that he loved being up there and had such a good time doing it. Plus he seemed like the nicest guy... At one point he said how we were all friends there tonight and he was always thanking us. No Bryce, thank you! Do yourself a favor and check him out. You can listen to a few of his songs on Pure Volume. He's coming back to the Creepy Crawl on December 17th and I think we're going to go. He's SO worth the three hour trip.
and roll project that not only rocks the party but is filled with passion and
sincerity and has uniquely become a place of acceptance where everyone is
invited. "
Better Luck This Time
Monday, October 03, 2005Make sure you check out my brother's new song, Heart Is Where The Home Is, on his pure volume site. He sounds great! I'm so proud. Labels: family matters, music
Getting Tagged
Thursday, August 25, 2005Sondra tagged me so here I go:
10 years ago: This time 10 years ago, holy cow... I was starting my sophomore year in high school. I had the biggest crush on a Senior named Matt Smith. I was thankful that the previous year's seniors were gone because they were rather mean. I had made friends with a few girls in the junior class and one in the senior class so I remember thinking that I loved high school. Up until that year I had to only hang out with my class which usually wasn't so fun.
5 years ago: I was back at Eastern for my Junior year of college. I had a double room as a single in the dorm with Jess next door and our friend Sheri next to her. That was an awesome year in the dorm. We had such a blast. Always laughing, doors always opened, talking, pulling pranks... I was lucky enough to build some awesome friendships that year.
1 year ago: Josh and I had only been engaged for a few months so we were starting the big decisions for the wedding. He was starting class at Eureka. Really not too much different from right now.
Yesterday: Got a flat tire, which sucked. Met my good friend, Nicole, at Monical's for pizza...and that definitely improved my day.

Alphabetizing sucks
Monday, May 16, 2005Last night I tackled our massive cd collection. A couple months ago we decided to put all of our cds back into their original cases instead of having them in the cd books. The problem with this is that we have so many compliations that we've made... We bought a few jewel cases but had about 50-60 to go. So they've pretty much been unorganized since then. For the past couple weeks I've been saying that I'm going to put them back in the books alphabetized. Labels: music
It just wasn't working to have them in their cases. I didn't want to spend the time looking through them all and having to find the right case.... Basically it was a pain. So I finally got motivated and last night I started the process. I filled the two cases that I had and we need to get another one. I think I got through the O's.
This was after getting to the D's.
And here's what I have left after getting through the O's. There's also a stack of about 50 loose cds that go in with these.
"I got my philosphy, keeps my feet on the ground"
Wednesday, May 04, 2005When I was a Senior at Eastern my roommate Sheri gave me a compliation cd that her boyfriend had made for her. I listened to it a few times not knowing what was really on it. I wrote down on a piece of paper the tracks that I really liked so I could find out who sung them. I remember asking her, "Who sings track #2?" "Ben Folds." What about track #5? "Ben Folds." This went on through all six of the tracks that I liked. I had picked out all of his songs and didn't even know it! Later that year I went to his concert at U of I and loved him even more! Since then I have worn out one of his cds and still listen to him all the time. Labels: music
So I was thrilled last night when Josh and I saw Ben Folds in concert. He is probably the most talented musician I've seen live. We left for Chicago around 3:30 after almost forgetting the tickets. We got to the city around 5:30 but it took another hour to get downtown and find a parking spot. We finally parked in a lot that was for a little strip mall. There were definitely towing signs but we prayed really hard that we wouldn't get towed.
It's just such a different environment up there. You get honked at if you're not right on the green light, people driving wherever they want to... It was really cool to be downtown though because I had never been. I totally felt like Country Mouse in the big city. I was really glad that Josh was driving. Once we were finally ready to go in I realized that I had my camera in my purse and you couldn't take cameras in. So we walked back out to the car to drop it off and sat there for five minutes trying to decide if we should move the car or if it would be okay. Josh decided that it would be okay so we headed back down the block to the Riviera Theatre.
On the way a guy asked us for a cigarette and when Josh told him that we didn't have any, he was like, "Don't fabricate! If you don't want to give me one, just say no!" That cracked me up...fabricate. The we passed all the scalpers or people looking for tickets and finally got in the front door.
The Riviera is all general admission so we could go wherever we wanted. The place has a lot of character. It seems kind of like a dive when you first walk in but really it's just a little rundown. The sound was still good and it wasn't gross or anything. If anything, it just made it more interesting. It looks well used. We walked down to around the stage trying to figure out where to go. We were about 8 feet from the stage but the thought of standing the whole time and not really seeing that well... It didn't really appeal to me. So we went up to the balcony and found 5th row seats that were pretty good with a nice view of the stage. Of course we were right behind annoying kissy-face couple and an oversized mullet hair pair of Smokey Smokersons who smoked a pack each during the concert. But I didn't let those four ruin my experience.
The opening act was well interesting. A Meatloaf + Jack Black lookalike that played the accordion and had songs that sounded like something James Looney would write. I did some research and after much searching I found out that his name is Corn Mo. He was pretty unique!
FINALLY Ben Folds came out and we were stoked. He sounded awesome. He played song after song, new stuff, old stuff... He rocked. He played Josh's favorite off the new album, "Jesusland" and then played "Underground" which is classic. I love it because the whole audience gets involved. During Underground, everyone was singing along and he looked at the crowd and we all sang, "Hand me my nose ring." Some guy down in the front drew him and Ben Folds showed everyone the picture. The kid asked to hear "Kalamazoo" and even though he didn't remember all the chords Ben kept at it. Towards the end of the concert he had the audience sing the oohs in one of his songs. After the song was over he kept directing the crowd to do the "oohs". He actually jumped up on the piano and was directing us. It was hilarious. He finished the concert with "One Angry Dwarf" at hyper-speed. I couldn't believe how fast he was playing that piano. He just seems so normal and down-to-earth but his talent blows me away.
We headed back to the parking lot hoping that our car was still there. On the way a lady came up to Josh and offered him "half a million for your girl". Josh said that I was worth more than that and she went on and on about how pretty I was. She said she was giving credit where credit was due. Then she said that she just got out of jail and needed forty more cents for a beer. Josh gave her the change that he had. He told me that he's a sucker for anyone who thinks his "wife" is pretty. I told him that she was just trying to get his money. We rounded the corner and our car was still there!! Thank goodness. Josh got us out of the city and then I drove the rest of the way home.
It was a late night but Ben Folds was totally worth it.
Icing on the crappy day of a cake
Saturday, March 26, 2005I have been planning for awhile to do something for Josh and my 2 year anniversary. I got tickets to the Ben Folds concert in May and was going to surprise Josh. Yeah, he definitely found out today. I don't know why but he decided to "get organized". He went through my PDA and wrote down all the important dates so he would know what is going on too. I was a dope and put the concert on my calendar. Here's how I found out that he knew: Labels: all you need is love, music, wedding
Josh and Tony were chatting and I was working on wedding invitations (THERE ARE SO MANY!).
Josh randomly says to me: It would be really cool to go to a Ben Folds concert.
Me: Yeah, it would be cool.
Josh: *smirks*
I then turn back to my invites. The wheels in my head were turning. I realized that 30 minutes ago he was updating his calendar with my PDA...I remembered that I had the concert on my PDA....CRAP!!!
I looked back at him and said: You little brat! DARNIT!
He laughed and then definitely knew. So I told him and he felt bad that he figured it out but it wasn't his fault he was just trying to "get organized"! Oh well. Now he knows.
It leaves him time to plan something in return.
Don't mess with me...I might start crying
Saturday, February 12, 2005What is my deal today? Augh...I feel so emotional. On the way to town I was listening to my Ben Folds compilation for about the 5,000th time. (I have worn the cd out.) "The Luckiest" came on and I actually started crying. I thought about Josh and our wedding... I started thinking about that day, the people, the ceremony and dancing with my dad. It was a snowball effect really.
I thought about my parents and how long they've been married. They still chase each other around the house and my dad still informs us that "mom has a nice butt". I can remember as a little kid laying in bed and hearing my parents talking in their bed long after we should have been asleep. I always wondered how they could still have stuff to talk about when they had talked all evening! I mean, really...could two people have that much to talk about?? I could only hope that Josh and I are like that after 25 years of marriage. I always am a little sad when we go out to eat and see an older couple just sitting there eating, not talking...
I guess it's just so crazy to take your life and your spouse for granted. But when you think about it...we're so lucky to have found that one person that we want to spend the rest of our lives with.
Alright, sorry for the extremely sappy entry...it's just one of those days. posted by kimberly, 3:35 PM 0 comments |
The Charity Case Rocks
Saturday, January 08, 2005Saw Tony's band (The Charity Case) play last night in Decatur at Wake The Dead. I thought they sounded awesome. We didn't stay to hear any of the other bands but I'm sure The Charity Case was the best. It was pretty crazy to see my little brother up there on stage rockin' out. I was awfully proud. Who knows, maybe someday my baby bro will be a big rock star! Labels: family matters, music
Emily & Josh, Happy Concert-goers
Tony on Bass & Matt on Guitar
