about me

I'm 28 and live in central Illinois. I've been married to an amazing man for three years. We have a little white dog and just bought our first house! We are also expecting our first child in October. I LOVE design and photography. I'm busy getting my own business up and going. We also do what we can to be a little more eco-friendly.

goal = problem?

Wednesday, January 09, 2008

One of my goals for this year is to get more prints of pictures I take. "Back in the day" when shooting on film, there was no question about it...you got prints of every picture you took. Since getting my first digital camera, the amount of prints I get has taken a nose dive.

I miss having the actual prints to look through so I made a goal for the new year. I decided that I would try to regularly order prints. Now my problem is that I have no idea what I'd do with them. In college (back in the day), when I would get pictures developed I usually scrapbooked them. The extras just went into a storage box.

I would like to be able to just stick the prints in an album and go on my merry way. The problem is that I think I need some sort of system. Do I get a large album for the whole year and put pictures in it in order? But then what happens when I take a picture of my niece or nephew? I have specific albums just for them that I started when they were born. I want to continue those but I wouldn't want to leave any picture of them out of the yearly album. So then would I put a copy in both? That would be so confusing. Maybe I should only do a separate album for them until they were a year old.

ARGH. I need help with this! With thousands of pictures, I don't really know what to do with them all.

I have been thinking about this lately as well. In fact, I just placed an order for some prints through Flickr yesterday.

With the niece/nephew album issue, I guess when figuring up the prints to order, I would just order an extra print of the ones that include them. That way you have one for their album without taking away from your yearly album.

And as far as the yearly archives, that could be really fun. You could do small monthly albums or one big yearly one. Just think if you had your whole 365 project in an album... cool. Or at the end of the year, you could pick your favorites and have a book made. Many possibilities.

I got a laugh out of "goal=problem?"... it would seem to be the formula for life. :)
I've decided to just do books from blurb.com rather than getting prints. That way it's already dealt with and honestly it costs a bit less if you get the small books. I've accepted the fact that I'll never be a scrapbooker :P

I'm thinking of doing a book a year, plus whatever big trips or important events come my way.
Methinks you need an Asuka. ;)

I think it would be fun to experiment with getting prints of your favorite shots in varying sizes and then scoping out a flea market for a cool frame for each.
I'm with Hanna...that sounds like a great solution!
