the rainy day wedding

Tuesday, May 29, 2007

Saturday was the outdoor wedding I had lined up to shoot for another photographer. I woke up around 6:30 and the sun was coming out. I thought that maybe the 70% chance of rain for the day had been wrong!! About 30 minutes later the rain started and didn't look to be letting up.

I paced and worried about the wedding all morning. I was so nervous and just wanted to get it done with. Josh and I left around 11:30 and it poured for the 45 minute drive. I of course, worried some more. I tried to come up with a backup plan on where to do all of the group shots and formals. I really didn't have a clue. The wedding was going to be in the bride's parents' backyard and their house was pretty little. I felt terrible for the bride and groom because their ceremony would be ruined. But I was more in a panic about the pictures. I mean, this was my first wedding shooting for another photographer.

By the time we arrived the rain had slowed to a sprinkle and I felt slightly encouraged. The bride, Rachel, was so sweet. She said when she had woke up to thunder that she had just laughed. I got shots of her getting ready and doing her makeup. The groom, Kyle, showed up and got ready himself. I stepped out the back door about this time and would you believe that it wasn't raining at all?

We were able to do EVERY single picture outside. We were still able to take Kyle and Rachel to the park and train tracks to do some fun stuff. We did all family pictures and group shots in their backyard. (Their backyard was so well manicured. People kept asking if the grass was real! It looked like a golf course.)

About 30 minutes before the ceremony the rain started again (well after I was done shooting the necessary pictures). A few minutes before the ceremony was scheduled to start, the rain stopped. The guys dried off the chairs and everyone sat down. Kyle and Rachel were married to overcast skies with all of their friends and families holding their umbrellas by their side (just in case).

After the ceremony everyone started to head for the reception hall. Josh and I took our time but finally decided to head there as well. We got in the car and down the block and it DOWN POURED. I mean, we're talking buckets of rain. It was insane. Josh and I just kept saying how crazy it was!

I still can't get over how the rain held off at the appropriate times for me. It was such a blessing. Josh and I had such a blast shooting this wedding. Kyle and Rachel were so much fun and totally willing to do anything. Afterwards I felt a little sad that I won't get to see them again. It was so stressful beforehand but during I had such a good time. Plus I was really pleased with all of the shots. Hopefully the photographer who hired me agrees!

I'm telling you, I have never known the rain not to let up for a wedding. My wedding day -- downpour until time to leave for the ceremony and until about 10 minutes after we loaded up for the reception. There was another one we had last year that rained all the night before, all morning and all afternoon (to the point that the grass was literally floating) -- we had 3 different contingency plans, none of which was as nice than the garden outside. And what do you know? The rain stopped about 5 mins before the ceremony and started back up about 10 mins after.

I could go on and on and on, but I think after seeing 82 weddings, I have seen only one get ruined by the rain. :)

Popping over to gush over what I can guess are images nothing short of amazing.

Hugs!

about me

I'm 29 and live in central Illinois. I've been married to an amazing man for four and a half years. We have a little white dog and bought our first house in 2008. We added a new member to our family in October 2008. Jasper is made of marshmallows and awesome. I am lucky enough to stay at home with him. He makes us laugh everyday.
